Beer's law stated that the absorbance of a dilute solution is directly proportional to the concentration of the solution provided that all other factors remain constant.

To make the calibration curve, dilute solutions with different concentrations are prepared, and then the absorbance of each solution is measured using a colorimeter with a suitable filter under certain fixed conditions.

Use of the calibration curve:
The absorbance of a real sample solution is measured under identical conditions as making the calibration curve. The concentration of the real sample solution is determined from its absorbance reading by using the calibration curve. For example, if the absorbance of a real sample solution is found to be 0.5 under identical conditions as making the calibration curve, the concentration of the real sample solution is determined to be 0.25 M by using the calibration curve.
