When a Newton’s ring apparatus is immersed in a liquid, the diameter of the eighth dark ring decreases from 2.92 cm to 2.48 cm. What is the refractive index of the liquid?

The formula for the radius of a dark ring r is given by,
r^2 = (m.w.R)/n
where R is the radius of curvature of the lens
w is the wavelength of light used
n is the refractive index of the medium

When air is used, n= 1
hence, (2.92/2)^2 = 8wR -------------- (1)

When the given liquid is used,
(2.48/2)^2 = 8wR/n ----------------- (2)

(1)/(2): (2.92/2.48)^2 = n
i.e. n =1.39
