Is Derek Jeter overrated or underrated?

This is an interesting subject. I've heard a lot of people say he's the most overrated player in sports and I've heard people say he's still underrated. What are your thoughts? Obnoxious Yankees fans will not get points. Before you go nuts, notice the word *obnoxious*.

Pinstriped, nice answer. Forgive me if for asking Yanks fans not to be obnoxious. It seems like a very common thing, though.

I answered a question like this a few days ago, this is what I put.

No, he's not overrated. Derek Jeter has won 5 World Series, is a 10 time All Star, and is the captain of the Yankees, among many other accolades. He plays his heart out on the field and gives 150% every day. Even if he is hurt, the only words you hear out of his mouth are "I'm fine, I'll be ok" (so no one ever really knows if he is hurt or not). He wants to be out there playing every day, sometimes to his detriment, when Joe Girardi makes him take a day off to stay healthy. He is eternally optimistic, and you will never hear him say a negative word. He works tirelessly throughout the offseason to continue playing like he's still 25. He's a leader by example, and never makes excuses for himself. Whenever he is interviewed after a game, it's always "we" or "us", never "me" or "I", and when the question is asked directly about him, he will answer it, but it's immediately followed by something about the team. Even most Red Sox fans respect him, if not like him. He has worked hard to get where he is, and I think he is deserving of everything he receives. I would say that after he retires, no other Yankee will ever wear number 2 again.

As an extension of that, I don't think he's underrated either, because he's definitely never overlooked. He is rated where he should be.

Derek Jeter to me is neither overrated nor underrated. He is the captain of the most glorified team in the history of sports in North America. He doesn't really have a weak spot, except for power. But Jeter is a leadoff hitter, and the rest of the Yanks have more than enough power hitting to go around.
As a Mets fan, I admire Jeter's work as a player and I look foward to seeing Jeter get inducted into the Hall of Fame.

He's rated as he is. He's a good team leader, hitter and fielder.

He is correctly rated. The guy is a 37 year old shortstop who is still getting the job done at the defensive position. His batting average hasn't dropped like most aging baseball players. I'm a Mets fan, but I give a lot of props to Jeter for proving doubters wrong (that he couldn' handle Shortstop getting into his late 30's). He also is one of the most classy baseball players in the sport today.

He's underrated. He's a gold glove and silver slugger shortstop, won 5 world series. Captain of the Yankees, All Star, plays his heart out every game, gives respect to everyone, and loves the game.
Here's the reason i think he's more over looked than underrated. He has, does, and always will play the game the right way, and he's done it in a Hall-of-Fame way.
The Yankees will soon have numbers 1,2,3,4,5,7,8,9, and 10 retired. So who's gonna take #6?

he has 5 rings, he's obviously not overrated
