Populations of tigers occupy geographically separated patch, but may move from one patch to another if habitat become unsuitable. One of two patches is chosen at random and surveyed. Patch 1 is occupied with probability 1/5 and Patch 2 is occupied with probability 1/10.


(a) the probability that the selected patch is occupied
(b) the probability that Patch 2 was the one selected given that the selected patch
is occupied.

(a): Pr (occupied patch) = (1/2) x (1/5) + (1/2) x (1/10) = 3 / 20 = 0.15
(b): Pr (patch 2 | occupied patch) = [(1/2) x (1/10)] / 0.15 = 1/3 = 0.333
