I will take the Golf over the Polo. From the size standpoint, Golf is the smallest a car can be for safety and practicality in my opinion.
Both are well built cars. If the cars are well maintained they should last for a while. The only major problems comes with the first generation DSG. If the transmission is being filled with the wrong (non-factory spec) transmission oil, the whole tranmission can break down, and it's costly to replace (about HK$40K). The second area is the 1.4L twincharge engine. This is a great engine, but should follow all the oil change religiously.
I hate to give price reference on used car, because they vary based on years, mileage, condition, etc. You should check with the major used car website to have a ball park idea on price.
