There is no promise the application will be success. The reason why you receive the invitation letter is simply because you currently don't have HSBC credit card and you had fiscal income in last year.
The card centre won't proceed to check your credit grade/rating before it sends you the invitation letter. It is still possible for the card centre to reject your application by reviewing your credit history and credit grade/rating.
If you necessarily mean that you won't apply for the credit card when there is no 100% chance on succeed, then I am afraid I will say - don't bother to apply for it.
The following is my personal opinion:
What is your purpose on applying for the credit card? Simply just want to have one around? Plan to buy something by installment? Purchase something online?
Identify why you want to apply for the credit card first, and give yourself some days (e.g. one day before the invitation expire) to consider if you really need it. If you don't really need it, then forget about it. If you really need it, then you just need to make sure that you won't get yourself into trouble again.
