Last week, I opened a checking account at bank. I talked to the teller with my broken English, “Can I open a checking accountant?” The young teller asked me, ”Are you Chinese?” I replied to her, “Yes.” Then, she told me, “Have a seat first. I find someone who speaks Chinese for you.” Based on American-Chinese were limited, I had waited about half hour to have a service at bank.
Being an immigrant has many challenges in the new country. Nevertheless, I believe if I keep adding more effort in English, everybody will understand what I am trying to say in one day. Moreover, I would like to show appreciation to Amy Tan because I got pleasure reading “Mother Tongue”. Tan raises a vital issue of the immigrant family. I think Tan's mother played a great role in learning of English. Also, I admire Tan’s writing very much because she has an uncanny ability to express her thoughts clearly. “Mother Tongue” is a beautiful passage. And through the essay, I think Tan wants to send a powerful message of how we ought to view people by their beautiful side, but not by their shortcomings.
