The above figure shows the aluminium heat sink of an audio amplifier which is used to transfer heat away
from the components inside the amplifier. Which of the following statements about the heat sink is/are correct?
(1) The heat sink is made of aluminium so that it can transfer heat away faster by conduction.
(2) The heat sink is silver in colour so that it can transfer heat away faster by radiation.
(3) The heat sink has a fin-like design to increase the surface area so that it can transfer heat away faster by
conduction of air.
A. (2) only B. (3) only C. (1) and (2) only D. (1) and (3) only
Would you please explain why (3) is incorrect?
What is the function of the fin-like design ?

Statement (3) is incorrect, as air is a poor conductor of heat. The air surrounding the heat sink could not effectively conduct the air away.

In fact, the increase in contact area of the heat sink by means of a fin-like design is to increase the heat loss by convection, which is the most effective way of removing heat. The large contact area increases the volume of air involved in the convection process.

Statement (2) is also not correct. A good radiator should be black in colour. If it is silver in colour, it will be a poor radiator.
