I live in Australia, and I am planning to go to Japan, preferably Tokyo, to work as an English teacher for children or adults. Does anyone know any English teaching institute in Tokyo, would you please give me their contact details?

Thank you very much. This would be very important and useful to me.

You maybe able to find work teaching English in Japan, but you won't have a choice of whom or where. Very unlikely you'll be sent to Tokyo. They will send you where they need you. You need to have a job waiting for you before you leave.

The basic qualifications are a degree (in almost any subject) and a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate because it's getting harder to find work and the more you've got in terms of qualifications, the better.

There are generally 3 ways to find work.

1. Find an job online. If you're qualified then this shouldn't be too hard.

2. Find an agent who will find you work. This is a good option but you must NEVER pay an agent a single cent to find you work. Note that if you get your TEFL certificate through some schools they will help with this at no extra charge (e.g. ICAL).

3. Go there in person and find work. This option is really only if you lack teaching qualifications. It's easier to find work by knocking on doors and hoping the school needs a teacher. You may get lucky.

Good luck!

It's not as easy to find work in Japan as as it used to be. But, if you have a first degree (3-4 years) in any subject and can market yourself well, you should be able to find something. Some sort of English teaching qualification would give you the edge. I would recommend you do the Cambridge CELTA or the Trinity CertTESOL. There are courses to be found in most major Australian cities. The world of TESOL is getting more and more competitive, and as the money for teachers in Japan is reasonably good, there is quite a bit of competition.

To find a job in Japan, I would recommend the following websites:

daveseslcafe.com - International Jobs Board *definitely the best site for Japan!
tefl.com

If you have no teaching qualification and are just looking to spend some time in Asia, I'd recommend going to Korea. It is much easier to find a job there - even with no teaching experience and no teaching qualification. The people are friendly and the money is very good considering your rent is paid for and living expenses are very affordable. Most people manage to save between $5000 and $15000 US depending on their spending habits and the area they work in.
參考: I've been teaching English for five years, and worked in Japan for two years.

You can find information on English teaching jobs in Japan with two minutes on Google. There are websites all over the place, like Dave's ESL Cafe, that list job opportunities in Japan. That said, unless you have a 4-year degree (a Bachelor's in the US, not sure what the equivalent is in Australia) you're not going to get a job, period. You need the degree to get your work visa.
