What is an axel in a car?

What is it anyway? I passed by a toll area, and it shows a list of price of axels. For example, two axels for $5.00. three axels for $x and so on.

An "axle" is the metal rod connecting two wheels. You are seeing a sign for big trucks. Some have many axles. The bigger the truck the more damage to taxpayer paid for roads. Bring back trains!

in that case it means how many sets of wheels.......so if u had a trailer u would have 3 .....18 wheeler has 5......
