Why was Ash from Pokemon allowed to travel?

He was 10 years old at the time and well his mom let him go travel around the world with a thing that shot thunderbolts out of his cheeks. Isn't that child neglect or something? I've been wondering for some time now.

Unbeknown, to most viewer, Ash's mother was actually suffering from a severe heroin addiction, and needed money to support her "hobbies". After Ash became famous and started earing lots of money, he started sending it to his mother for her heroin. Officer Jenny noticed the huge amounts of money being transfered and arrested his mother, and DCFS took Ash away from her. That is why, they had to get a new Ash that now sounds homo-ish.

Possibly the same reason that Kurosaki Isshin lets Ichigo run off to the Soul Society and Higurashi Kagome's mother lets her travel around the Feudal Era with a half-demon and a bunch of people she (Kagome's mother) has never met before. The simple reason that, it's anime.
Alternatively - maybe the Pokemon world is safer than ours (I mean, the only villains that I recall are Team Rocket, who always seem to screw up get defeated anyway).

Hm. I have that same question. Oh, and I always wondered if they ate pokemon meat- cos thay have meat (in some episodes thay are eating and I see things resembling chicken legs). Heh Id laugh if thay had normal animals there. Hm is everyone a vegetarian?!

In their world, it is tradition and normal that a ten year old would be allowed to travel and begin on an journey of not only learning about other pokemon for the professors that they retrieve their starter pokemon from which in a way, it's like using child labor without pay. Lol. Other than that, it's also normal during this journey for the child to learn more about him/herself and grow up.
Still, Ash's mother is shown as most of the time, wishing he'd come and stay home but as the series has developed, she seems to have accepted that this is the life he wishes for and this is his dream.

In Pokemon, once you reach the age of 10, you can have your own Pokemon. Once you have your own Pokemon, you can travel the world of Pokemon to be a GRAND MASTER.
Thats the whole point of the anime really. All of Ash's friends are not even 18. Jesse and James are only 17 in that anime in the first season, Brock was only 12 and Misty was like 11 yrs old.
You can pretty much travel the Pokemon World if you have a Pokemon with you all the time. If not, ten you are a vulnerable little fly, correct? And since he's on a "quest" to "Be the Very best," he is also filling the Poke-dex for Professor Oak; Gary Grandpa. :D

The people in Kanto have a vastly different culture I guess...and also, cartoons and video games are like that. You can also just walk into people's houses and start talking to them and even watch their TVs. They don't care at all.
