two glsaa microscope slides have a fine hair trapped between them at one end, and at the other end, the slides are firmly clamped in close contact. the wavelength of monochromatic light used to illuminate the slide normally is 600nm.
(a) draw a labelled diagram of suitable expt. arrangement which includes the apparatus of the figure to measure the seperation between adjacent fringes
(b) suggest one reason to explain why the fringe seperation is not constant.
(c) find the diameter of the hair
(d) if the space in the wedge is filled with liquid of refractive index 2, how many bright fringes are expected to be observed this time?

a. Use a travelling microscope.

b. The glass above is not flat, so the fringe separation is not constant.

c. The hair corresponds the 5th minimum.

As the light hits the upper surface of the glass below, it will suffer a pi phase change.

So, 2d + 入/2 = (4 + 1/2)入

d = 2入 = 1200 nm = 1.2 X 10^6 m

d. Initially, the no. of bright fringes = 4

If the liquid of refractive index = 2 fills the space, that means at the hair, it corresponds to the 10th minimum.

And so, 9 bright fringes will be observed.
