we are friend makes no sense

Because the subject is "we," which means "I and at least one other person," "friends" must also be plural. "We are friends." "I am a friend" is OK too, but it has a singular subject, just one person. "Friend" is a noun, and most nouns are pluralized by 's.' "Friend" and "friends" are both nouns.

We--plural pronoun
are--plural verb
friends--plural noun

The word 'we' is plural, so the word 'friend' must be made plural too.

'We are friends' is correct.

Are we friends now?
