solubility:
S8 < CH3COOCH3<CH3CH2CH2OH<CH3OH

點解係呢個次序? 麻煩一個個比較下

Solubility in water:
S8 < CH3COOCH3 < CH3CH2CH2OH < CH3OH

Both CH3CH2CH2OH and CH3OH are alcohols which contain -OH group. Both the alcohols can form hydrogen bonds with water, so that they are more soluble in water than the other two compounds.

The alkyl group (CH3CH2CH2-) in CH3CH2CH2OH is longer than that (CH3-) in CH3OH. The longer alkyl group is more hydrophobic. Besides, the longer alkyl group can break the hydrogen bond between alcohol and water molecules more readily. Therefore, CH3OH is more soluble in water than CH3CH2CH2OH.

CH3COOCH3 molecules are polar while S8 molecules are non-polar. Therefore, CH3COOCH3 is more soluble in water than S8.
