the more creative the students were thought to be ,determined by a questionnaire on apast achievements ,the more trouble they had (ignoring) the unwanted data.
I wonder why there is " ignoring "
and if it can instead of "ignored "or "to ignore" in there?

had.....................................predicate verb. ( not: have + p.p.=perfect tense )
ignoring...............................gerund as noun as Object作為他們擁有(被他們忽略沒用的一種東西)而令到好多煩惱.
the unwanted data................Complement of object
*gerund=功能可作:subject...object...complement.(不可作adj,唔好誤會)時態是超越原動詞v或同時.
*infinitive=功能可作 : noun...adj...adv時態是遲滯過原動詞v或同時.但用在[完成時]是超越原動詞v.(to ignore 在此不适用)
*participle=功能可作 : verb...adj...adv時態是現在分詞v+ing是與原動詞v同時.
(分詞不可作subject/object/complement來用)過去分詞p.p.是超越原動詞v.(ignored在此不适用)
