I currently live in Calgary, Alberta, and is thinking to move to Moncton, New Brunswick. wondering if Moncton is a good place to live?
My husband and I are looking for a city with lower cost of living, and smaller city to live so people are nicer.
we have 2 dogs and 1 cat, is Moncton a dog friendly city? are there any off-leash dog parks?
Appreciate all the help as this is a big decision, involving selling our house in Calgary.
thanks everyone!

I met my B.C. wife while working out of Alberta and moved her and our 3 boys to the Moncton area 12 years ago and haven't looked back since. This is a great area, some very good schools, some of the best beaches in Canada nearby. Cost of housing is about 1/4 of what Calgary is but work isn't quite so availible either. We bought a home in 1997, 3 bedroom on 2 1/2 acres for 61,500, sold it in 2007 for 115,000 and are in a 4 bedroom with a paved driveway , 28x 14' garage, with a 28 x 20' workshop on over an acre less than 5 minutes to the water and 40 minutes 100km and 110km commute into Moncton. We put our 2 youngest in French immersion in Grade 1 and they are fluently bilingual now in grades 8 and 9. They go to a small French school minutes away, 120students. Check out property in the Shediac- Richibucto areas of SE New Brunswick, some beautiful homes at very reasonable prices.Feel free to e-mail us from my profile and we can help answer any local questions you may have. Best wishes in your move.

I live in Moncton. Moved here in 2004, married a Moncton man, and the rest is history as they say. I fell in love with the city; and it's not a beautiful city per se, but it's the people. You have every kind of class of people, so it's not a snobby place. There is a strong French presence, but don't believe that you won't find work just b/c you can't speak French (that is I'm assuming here you aren't bilingual). I don't know if there are off-leash parks where I don't have a dog, but there are a lot of people with dogs around here! Actually my brother has been out west for the past---not sure---maybe 12 or so years--he was in Calgary for a time, and now is in Kelowna, and he's moving here to Moncton in May with his two dogs which are his babies since he's single w/no kids.
It's affordable here compared to Calgary and other Canadian cities, and it is a place with economic growth. It is "booming" and things went on as per normal for the most part here during that recession.
There's parks, best shopping in the Maritimes. Moncton is known as the "hub" b/c it's central to everything (Halifax, PEI, US border, Saint John, etc.). I am from Nova Scotia originally, but I feel like Moncton is my home, and I love it here very much.
Basically, Moncton has all the benefits of a larger city, yet the feel of a town, with friendly people, cleaner air, and less hectic. Yep, I love it here, as I am certain you and your hubby will if you move here. Halifax is pretty bad for crime and people aren't as friendly, Fredericton is not very friendly either compared to Moncton (I lived in Fredericton for almost 8 years). If you move to the Maritimes, this is the place to be. :)

I'm pretty sure it was a great place to live in the 1700-1800s, because a whole bunch of my ancestors lived there then. I'm not sure what it's like today. You might have better luck posting this in the Travel - Canada section. For some reason it ended up in Genealogy. =)

My fiancé is from Saint John, NB and he agrees with Bob above that Moncton is one of the best places as it is growing economically and geographically is close to Nova Scotia and PEI.

I live in Ottawa with my husband and adult children and I agree with everyone who wrote about Moncton N.B. Our former superintendant and his wife are from Moncton and are some of the nicest people going. The husband worked in the federal government here in Ottawa as an auditor and later on went back home. I am always looking at the real estate down in Moncton and if I ever left Ottawa I think that is where we would go. Calgary is a very expensive city and so is Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver and now Montreal has become expensive as well. Moncton is my choice and yes the nicest people and I doubt if you will miss Calgary very much. It will take you time to get used to black flies and mosquitoes and that I sure mind but when you are with good people around you you get used to a lot of things. Calgary is a big city and then you will be going to something a great deal smaller but better.

Hello I am a resident who has lived in a small town near moncton for about 7-8 years now. The cost is constantly rated the lowest in the country for houses. In the greater moncton area there are multiple dog parks both on leash and off for your two dogs. There are tons of schools in both english and french languages, in NB for children below grade 3 there is a French immersion program for students who want to learn french, there is also a grade 6 entry point as well.

Jobs are more scarce than calgary but still there are a decent bit of jobs around. The people here are some of the nicest you'll find and in terms of size of the city It is about an 11th the size of calgary.

I've never been to Moncton, but have visited other parts of New Brunswick. I have family that lives in the Bathurst area further north. I also have family in Calgary SE so I know a little about the area you are coming from.

I can tell you that from what I have seen, all of New Brunswick has that small town feeling to it, and people are very friendly. You will certainly save money there.

I'm betting if you have a home in Calgary, it is probably a little bungalow on a small to midsize lot, and you could probably sell it for over $300,000.

In New Brunswick, that kind of money would probably get you a large home on a couple of acres of land. My uncle bought his place just a few years ago, and he got 2.5 acres with an oil heated older cottage for under $100,000. Of course, he is in a much more rural setting (the old owners used to raise horses on the lot) and the house needs a bit of work and has no basement, just a crawlspace.

Most animals must be leashed, although if you have a fenced in backyard, your dogs could probably get enough exercise in there as many lots are the same size as a typical dog run. If you do find an off-leash park, it would likely only be in Moncton itself.

Cats are not usually leashed, but beware as there tends to be lots of traffic zooming around on the streets that your feline friend may have to contend with, and not all neighbours appreciate a cat wandering around their lot leaving "gifts" in their flower beds and gardens.

Much of the New Brunswick area I was in had clay-based soil that did not drain quickly, and so you had to contend with a long mosquito and black fly season each year, something that I never noticed out in Calgary, so keep this in mind when looking at properties. You will want a screened-in porch or deck, or a netted gazebo to enjoy your outdoor BBQs and relaxing evenings in a porch rocker.
