Can "greatly" be an adverb of manner and an adverb of degree?

1. He is a greatly successful person.
"greatly" is an adverb of degree, it describes how successful he is.

2. He greatly appreciated my assistance.
"greatly" is an adverb of manner, it describes the manner he expressed his appreciation.

Am I correct?

Both of your examples are adverbs of degree. They both express a measure or intensity.

Your second example more appropriately uses "greatly" not to tell us how (as in manner) he appreciated your assistance, but more to tell us how MUCH he appreciated your assistance.

Greatly, as far as I am aware, is always used as an adverb of degree.
