要有。用中文理解的話，你是在說那一種(個)在四千年前的發明叫「compass」，那一個(特別指出)的東西便要the。
從英文文法理解，compass係一件物件，除非係眾數時，一係有a, 一係用the。你現在不是說隨手拿來的任一個compass，而是指那中國發明的compass，所以一定要有the。

We must add "the" for the countable nouns:
e.g.
The Camera was invented by...
The bicycle was invented by a German...
The typewriter was invented by Christopher Latham Sholes
The telephone was invented by Alexander Graham bell in 1876
We must NOT add "the" for the uncountable nouns (including sports):
e.g.
Electricity was invented by ...
Basketball was invented by James Naismith
Football Was Invented in Scotland
Yoga was invented by M.I.T
Surfing was invented in Hawaii
Photography was invented by a painter
