1) Compass was invented in China four thousand years ago.

2) The compass was invented in China four thousand years ago.

希望這方法幫助你舉一反三地明白articles(a, an, the)的在文法和意義上的寫法。

We must add "the" for the countable nouns:
e.g.

The Camera was invented by...
The bicycle was invented by a German...
The typewriter was invented by Christopher Latham Sholes
The telephone was invented by Alexander Graham bell in 1876

We must NOT add "the" for the uncountable nouns (including sports):
e.g.
Electricity was invented by ...
Basketball was invented by James Naismith
Football Was Invented in Scotland
Yoga was invented by M.I.T
Surfing was invented in Hawaii
Photography was invented by a painter

The compass was first used in sailing.
