There are several other ways to say the time:
30 minutes past the hour => 1:30=half-past one (instead of one-thirty), 8:30=half-past eight(instead of eight-thirty).
15 minutes past the hour => 3:15=quarter-past three (instead of three-fifteen), 9:15=quarter-past nine (instead of nine-fifteen).
15 minutes until the hour => 12:45=quarter-to one (instead of twelve forty-five), 7:45=quarter-to eight (instead of seven forty-five).
Anytime after the hour (before it reaches the half-hour) => 2:20twenty-past two =(instead of two-twenty), 4:10=ten-past four (instead of four-ten).
Anytime before the new hour (after it passes the half-hour) => 5:40=twenty to six (instead of five-forty), 6:35=twenty-five to seven (instead of six thirty-five).
