Deferred payments are a part of sports and have been for awhile. The Lakers were paying Magic Johnson 1 million a year and that contract was just paid off in 2009 (it was signed in 1981). Mario Lemieux was owed so much in deferred money he ended up getting a settlement as part of his agreed purchase of the Penguins. Not even mildly surprised that Holliday gets deferred money....the Cardinals dont take in enough revenue to pay out the amount of salary they have under contract if they had to pay straight up.

This is normal. It's good for the club. Future money is valued at less than current money.

That's how some of the mega contracts work nowadays, deferrence with carrired interest, etc (everyone owes everyone). Matt Holliday is grossly overpaid, btw. So is Jason Bay. Sorry, Mets and Cards fans, facts are facts.
