Electronic configuration of B : 1s^2 2s^2 2p^1
One of the 2s electrons promotes to the 2p subshell, the electron configuration becomes:
B : 1s^2 2s^1 2p^2
It is more clearly shown as:
B : 1s^2 2s^1 2px^1 2py^1 2pz^0
There are three orbitals with unpaired electron, ie. 2s^1 2px^1 2py^1. The three orbitals are then hybridized and left the 2pz orbital is left unhybridized. Since the hybridization involves ONE s orbital and TWO p orbitals in the 2nd shell, it is thus sp^2 hybridization.
This is NOT sp^3 hybridization, because sp^3 hybridization involves ONE s orbital and THREE p orbital in the valence shell.
