Job title @ a small company?

Is it really a problem if a small company doesn't give you a job title? It's not that they don't want to give one to you, but the company is so small (20 employees) that a job title is not necessary.

No. It's not a problem. Unless you have a problem with not having a label.

Most positions at any company have a job function. Clerk, cashier, receptionist, assistant are typical "titles" that you won't find on business cards, but are very common..

Ask yourself what your primary job is at the company. Do you have other responsibilities too? With many start up businesses, you'll find the initial people that began the company have multiple jobs functions. For example, John Doe, CEO/Programmer. When it came down to having business cards printed, he would have to decide what he wants other people to 'know' him as at the company. The CEO or Programmer or both.

A title is basically a label. It's to tell other people what your position is at the company.
