If I had to guess, I would say yes. The Yankees are basically automatic (it would take several devastating injuries to derail that juggernaut), but Boston can be gotten to if they don't add a true threat to the middle of that order. Ortiz is on a steep decline, Drew is worth about 1/10 of his salary, Lowell is ancient and a holdover from the happiness following their last World Series (Cards fans can relate to this after watching Jim Edmonds go downhill after 2006). Youk is the only real threat that can bat third or fourth, and there aren't many viable options to replace him if he goes down. Whether they want to admit it or not, Boston is in trouble. They're an old team now with fragile stars. Talent is only useful if it's on the field.
The Rays, on the other hand, have been slowly developing players at skill positions and in the rotation for years. Longoria is already a top 5 3B in baseball and he's still so young. David Price will be in the rotation all season, along with a bevy of young pitching talent that has progressed nicely each season. Attentive baseball fans know that old teams rarely produce like they did in their primes. The Rays have been giving Boston fits for a couple seasons now, and it's easy to envision a scenario where they overtake them entirely in the division. With the exception of the Angels and maybe Rangers, I don't see another Wild Card threat in the AL as strong as the Rays.
