One killed, 35 injured as
Hong Kong bus overturns
A 17-year old girl was killed
Monday and 35 other passengers
were injured,seven of them
critically ,when a double-decker
bus overturned on a curve in
Hong Kong.
A 36-year-old man was driving
the bus southbound along Po
Shun Road,in Tsuen Kwan O at
about 12:20a.m.The accident
occurred as he was making a right
turn into Tong Ming Street.
The bus ,which some witnesses
said was driving with excessive
speed,toppled onto its side on
a roundabout . There were skid
marks that may indicate speed.
Police will investigate to determine
whether driver distraction was a
factor.The driver apparently was
on the first trip of his shift.
The driver and 35 passengers -
21 men and 14 women,aged 8 to
69-were taken to Kwong Wah,Queen
Elizabeth,United Christian and
Tseung Kwan O hospitals.
Some passengers had to be
cut free by firefighters from the
wreckage.The 17-year-old
passenger was declared dead
when she arrived at hospital,a
police spokesman said.
The bus driver,who was also
injured,was arrested on suspicion
of dangerous driving causing
death.He was released from
custody after posting a small bail.
The owner of the bus is Kowloon
Motor Bus company.
More than 40 people have been
killed in bus accidents in Hong Kong
over the past six years.
