Dear Ali,

Thank you for your e-mail. In fact,we have a similar festival in Hong Kong called Chinese New Year which starts on the first day of a new lunar calendar year.

Prior to the festival people like to clean and decorate their homes, and shop for new clothes. They would also like to stick "Fai Chuns" and place plants and flowers at home. In addition, they would buy some sweets and melon seeds for home which are symbols of living very happily and earn a lot of money in the future.

On New Year Eve, we have a rich dinner called "reunion dinner". This dinner is very important to us as it means our families are complete and happy. Therefore, our father will come home earlier to enjoy this meal.

On the first few days, people visit their relatives and friends. Before they enter into the houses, they would bless them by saying something lucky. They like to exchange their gifts and enjoy the yummy rice cakes and sweets. Also the married adults will give children red packets. When the children receive these red packets, they are joyful because there are money inside the packets.

At night, they watch the fireworks display on TV and go to the lunar new year stalls for shopping. When the holiday is over, they need to work again.

Have you ever heard about this festival before? Which festival do you like the best, Noruz or Chinese New Year, and why?

Hope to hear from you again.
