眾數上的 's 與 s' 如何使用 ?

在你以下的例子，可以清楚看到如果那 noun 的眾數是 s 結尾，那 noun 的 possessive form 便不需再加 s，而只需加 apostrophe 在 s 後面 (例如 boys')。 但如果那 noun 的眾數不是 s 結尾，那 noun 的 possessive form 便需要加 apostrophe s (例如 women's)。

the boys' cap
the students' dictionary

the women's clothes
the children's shoes

Possessive nouns express ownership

For singular nouns add: 's
The boy's cap.
The student's dictionary.
Irene's new dress looks beautiful.

For plural and singular nouns ending in "s" add: s'

For plural nouns not ending in "s" add: 's

We can use 's without a noun when the noun is understood.
e.g.1.They are staying at their aunt's at the moment(their aunt's=their aunt's house)
2.Is this your bag?No,it is my mother's
We also often talk about shops in this way.
e.g.1.My mother went to the baker's this morning.(the baker's=the baker's shop)


After a plural noun ending in 's we use ' without s.
e.g.1. I can't remember all his friends' names.
If the plural noun doesn't end in -s/-es , we use 's.
e.g.2. She put her children's toys in a box.
e.g.3. Whose coats are all these?They are the visitors' .
e.g.4. My parents' bedroom is next to mine.It's the largest bedroom in the flat.
