9. Testing the aircraft on the Flight Plans. The aircraft:
a. must travel through the air without touching anything that is directly or indirectly touching the floor unless it is
required in the Flight Plan. This must be observable to the judges.
b. are each only eligible for score for completing one Flight Plan (except as allowed in Mass Launch). All or part
of an aircraft that has completed a Flight Plan may be used to help complete additional Flight Plans as long
as it is not used as the aircraft.
c. must be safe and not cause harm or damage to the competition site, the judges, the team or anyone in the
audience.
d. can be touched and moved by the team members at any time except during an attempt at a Flight Plan.
Team members cannot touch the aircraft once it flies beyond the Start Line. If a team member touches an
aircraft that is beyond the Start Line during the flight, that attempt is over unless the judges determine that
the contact was incidental and did not help propel or guide the aircraft during the attempt. A judge will signal
the team of contact and let them know the attempt is over. The team may try again or try a different Flight
Plan and return to this one later if time allows.
e. may be returned to the starting position at any time. The Staging Area Judge will indicate the signal and the
judge, wearing something unique and easy to see, who will ring a bell if an attempt fails. If an attempt fails,
that judge will immediately signal. The bell used as the signal will not be loud to minimize interfering with the
performance. If the team is unsure the signal was given it may ask the judge who will then indicate if the signal
was given or not.
