Hypochlorite ( Chem !)

2009-12-27 8:55 pm
Hypochlorous acid = HClO ( H+, ClO-)
Hypochlorite ion = ClO-

Why the formula of sodium hypochlorite(Na+,ClO-) is NaOCl ? Must it be NaClO ?

I saw this in my chemistry book.

As I remember the Formula should be written as NaOCl
why??
because on structural sense, the Oxygen is the core atom and it's form single covalent bond with chlorine as a complex anion ClO- and on the other side oxygen also grabb an electron from sodium, so the formula should be NaOCl
if the negative charge is on chlorine the formula will write as another way e.g. NaClO3 the core atom is chlorine and it bond with three Oxygen
