A question about Gerund

第二句的那一句才是正確的。

The competition is being held now.

第一句表面上好像是正確的，但看真一些︰

The competition is holding now.

一個死物 competition，怎能自己舉行呢？

反之，第二句 The competition is being held now. 用了一個 passive 的方法去寫了這句句子。

The competition is being held now. ← 那場比賽現在舉行了。

用了 passive，即不會有以上的問題。

例如︰The apple is being eaten. vs The apple is eating.

這個例子很明顯，那個蘋果被人吃，並不是那個蘋果在吃東西。

Passive voice 的模式︰Sub. + be(v.) + (p.p)
