The point of solving an equation is to get the variable alone on one side. In this case the variable is on one side only but there is a 3 with it. First we have to see what the 3 is doing to the variable. In our problem, it's multiplying it by three. In order to get rid of this three we have to do the opposite. The opposite of multiplying is dividing. So, we divide 3*y by 3 which leaves us with just y. But wait! We can't just do that to one side. We have to do it to both sides to keep the equation equal. When we divide 12 by 3, we get four.

Our equations reads y=4 and we're done.

Hope the rest of your homework goes well!

if by using this you imply x^3 * y^2 = (t^4)/w y^2 = ((t^4)/w)/(x^3) y^2 = ((t^4)/w)/((x^3)/a million) y^2 = ((t^4)/w)*(a million/(x^3)) y^2 = (t^4)/(wx^3) y = sqrt((t^4)/(wx^3)) y = ((t^2)/x)sqrt(a million/(wx)) y = ±((t^2)/(wx^2))sqrt(wx) --------------------------------------... yet once you meant x^3 * y^2 = t^(4/w) y^2 = (t^(4/w))/(x^3) y = sqrt((t^(4/w))/(x^3)) y = ((t^2)/x)sqrt((t^(a million/w))/x) y = ((t^2)/(x^2))sqrt(xt^(a million/w)) y = ±((t^2)/(x^2))sqrt(xt^(a million/w))

3y = 12
3y/3 = 12/3
y = 4

simple y=4
2009-12-24 4:31 am
3 x y = 12
3 x 4 = 12

Divide by 3 on both sides of the equation (Inverse Operations), so you get
3y/3=12/3
That simplifies down to
y=4

Answer: y=4

Divide by 3 both sides to be left with y alone...

3y = 12
_______
3

y = 4

Hope this helps =)
