Joan is going to buy an encyclopedia and a photography book in a bookstore.The marked price and percentage discount for each book are as follows.

Encyclopedia:$750(10% off);Photography book:$210(30% off)

How can she buy these two books at the largest discount?Explain briefly and find the amount paid by Joan.

Since the discount for the Encyclopedia is only 10%, she should use the VIP card for the Encyclopedia to enjoy 15% discount.
Purchase price = $750 * (1 - 15%)
= $750 * 0.85
= $637.5
For the Photography book, the discount offered by the shop is 30% bigger than the VIP discount, she should buy this book without using the VIP card.
Purchase price = $210 * (1 - 30%)
= $147
Total purchase price = $637.5 + $147 = $784.5 (NOT $784.9)

The largest discount
=200% - (10%+30%)

The amount of Joan should pay
= (750+210) x 80%
= 960 x 80%
= 768
...(Therefore) She should pay $768 to buy these two books
