Order of Operations

Parentheses
Exponents
Multiply
Divide
Add
Subtract

Remember to Add and Subtract from Left to Right AND
Multiply and Divide Left to Right.

So,

(5 + 4 x 2) - 3 x 2^3

First, is parentheses. When looking in parentheses, start the list over again, first thing now inside is to multiply, then add.

(5 + 4 x 2) - 3 x 2^3
(5 + 8) -3 x 2^3
13 - 3 x 2^3 -----> now, next would be exponents.
13 - 3 x 8 -----> 2^3 is 8. Now, next is to multiply.
13 - 24 ----> only thing left is addition and subtraction.
13 - 24 = -11 -----> recall that when adding and subtracting, different signs you subtract and keep the sign of the bigger number. Therefore, your answer is negative 11.

I sure hope the "x" means multiply. It's better to use parenthesis () or * to indicate multiplication on the computer (my personal preference)

First, let's solve what is in the parentheses. 5+4x2= 13
Then continue the rest of the problem. 3x2^3
2^3= 2*2*2= 8
3*8= 24

So the answer is 13-24= -11

Rule 1: First perform any calculations inside parentheses.
Rule 2: Next perform all multiplications and divisions, working from left to right.
Rule 3: Lastly, perform all additions and subtractions, working from left to right.

So first multiply 4*2 (5+8) = (13)

Next simplify exponents:

8

(13)-3*8
13-24
-11

Hope that helps! :)

(5+4x2)-3x2^3 4x2=8
(5+8)-3x2^3 5+8=13
13-3x2^3 2^3=8
13-3x8 3x8=24
13-24 13-24=-11
-11

(5+4x2)-3x2^3= (5+8)-3x8=13-24= -11
