Let the price of the pen be $x.

3x + 4(x - 2) = 27
3x + 4x - 8 = 27
7x = 27 + 8 = 35
x = $5

Ans: The price of the pen is $5.

Let price of pen = x
so price of a pencil = x - 2
Price for 3 pens = 3x
Price for 4 pencils = 4(x - 2)
Total amount = 3x + 4(x - 2) which equals to 27
so 3x + 4(x - 2) = 27
3x + 4x - 8 = 27
7x = 27 + 8 = 35
x = $5.
