The literal meaning of 'Hong Kong' in Chinese is 'fragrant harbour'. Many years ago, when Hong Kong was still a fishing village, some Hong Kong people grew incense trees (or known as joss stick trees) to make incense to be sold to China and some other Southeast Asian countries. The Hong Kong people back then called this place 'Hong Kong', meaning 'fragrant harbour'. 'Hong Kong' is the English name that came from 香港
