When water is mixed with Portland cement a complicated set of reactions is initiated. The main strength giving compounds are the calcium silicates which react with water to produce a calcium silicate hydrate gel (C-S-H gel) which provides the strength.

水泥之所以會變硬，是由於化學作用。有別於漿糊或膠水的風乾。水泥成份中的鈣與水化合產生氫氧化鈣，氫氧化鈣的硬度和黏合力不足，如加上矽，可合成矽酸鈣，而沙正可提供矽，令到cement mortar更適合使用。
cement mortar的成份是：水泥、沙、水。各種成份的不同比例，會影響mortor的強度。簡單的說，水泥太多沙太少，成品會較硬和脆，容易龜裂和碎裂。水泥太少沙太多，成品會容易鬆散。水大多，成品體積收縮較大，而且降低力量。水太少，混合物不夠水份進行氫氧化合作用，同樣會降低力量。
