為什麼會有drop in on 的情況, 這是因為在英語詞類中有一種叫做動詞片語 (phrasal verb) 結構是一個動詞 (verb) 加上一個介系詞 (preposition), 動詞配合不同的介系詞就會產生不同的意思. 例如: look after, look out 等.

而drop in 就是這一類別, 正確意思是”順道探訪” 或 “順便探訪” (即沒有預先安排的), 有些動詞片語在句中可以把動詞和介系詞拆開來寫, 例如: drop off, 例句: Please drop me off at the post office (請在郵政局那裡讓我下車), 但這個 drop in 就不能分拆開來用.

另外由於你在句子中放入了物詞 (object) “another old friend” 這個探訪對像, 句式是 drop in on (somebody), 所以就要加上另一個介系詞on在 another old friend 的前面. 若果不加on 的話, 句法就是錯了.

不過可以有另一種寫法, 例如: If you are free next time, we could have a gathering. Please try to drop in. 這句因為沒有加上物詞, 所以就無需再加入系詞了.

dropped in其中一個用法是dropped in (on a person).是偶然探訪的意思.

所以
Then one day I dropped in on another old friend 是對的.
有一天我偶然探訪另一個老朋友.
