The base of a right - angled triangle is 14cm longer than its height and 2cm shorter than its hypotenuse. Find the length of the hypotenuse of the triangle.

求此直角三角形的斜邊長。
解 Let the base be x cm , then the height = x -14 cm
and the hypotenuse = x + 2 cm :
(x+2)^2 = x^2 + (x-14)^2
x^2 + 4x + 4 = x^2 + x^2 - 28x + 196
x^2 - 32x + 192 = 0
(x - 8)(x - 24) = 0
x = 8(rejected since it less than 14cm) or x = 24
The hypotenuse = 24+2 = 26cm
