Apart from the cost concern in which devices (kystron or magnetron)generation microwave are more expensive than thos of ultrasound, microwave is best reflected by metallic surface. But ultrasound can be easily reflected by any hard surfaces.

If the sensor is used underwater, microwave would undergo strong attentuation,and the use of ultrasound is preferred.
