Banquet tables usually include round tables, square tables and oblong tables, among which oblong tables are mostly used. So I would like to introduce the different of seating for oblong tables between Korea and France.
In public gatherings, social gatherings and banquets, Korean gentlemen used to sit on the right and ladies on the left, while the order of seating is dependant on status and age. Regardless of gender, the one who is highest in status and the oldest people will sit at the very front in a banquet setting. In Korean tradition the elderly are being respected, as they are knowledgeable and experienced, and granted the privilege of a front seat. Generally speaking, this kind of seating order is a manner of the Korean, showing respect to the elderly. Taking a wrong seat represents a discourteous behaviour to the Korean, and they will think that you are just offensive.
French are very demanding on banquet manner. Some of the customs that most of the people will follow include: “Ladies first”, “the right side signifies prestige”, “facing the door represents higher standing”, and “crossover seat alignment”. Let me explain what these rituals are about. Firstly, in western table manner, ladies are being respected in many aspects. In setting the seating order, lady masters are usually invited to take the prime seat, while gentlemen are required to take the secondary one. Secondly, it is a convention that the right side is the symbol of prestige. Concerning a particular position, its right hand side is higher than the left in status. For instance one should arrange a male guest to sit at the right of a female guest. Thirdly, a seat facing the door represents higher standing and the door means the main entrance of a restaurant. It is usually higher than the one sitting back to the door. Finally, the seating should be aligned in a crossover approach for the sake of meeting friends and social purposes.
