The bonding of CO is like that of CO2.

In CO2, 1 C atom will have double covalent bond with one O atom and the C atom will
also have double covalent bond will another O atom. Then, C and 2 O atoms have
octet structure.

In CO, 1 C atom will have double covalent bond wil the O atom, same as CO2.
However, C atom doesn't have octet structure while O atom has already achieved
octet structure. As a result, O atom will have dative covalent bond with C atom, where
O atom is the donor atom and C atom is the aceptor atom. 1 O atom contributes 2 e-
to C atom so that C atom can also have octet structure.

To conclue that, C and O form double covalent bond and O contributes 2 e- to C
where dative covalent bond is formed.
