The curve C has equation y=4x^2+5-x/x The point p on C has coordinate 1.

show that the value of dy/dx at P is 3

show methods please
thanks very much

Looks like I've misread the given function because when x = 1, dy/dx ≠ 3 ... probably best to use brackets to make it clear and also say which coordinate is given ... x or y ... big difference!!

Anyway I did this so I'm posting it ... maybe the method will help:

y = (4x² - x + 5) / x ... hope that's it (well I guess it's not)

Use the quotient rule:

dy/dx = [x . (8x - 1) - (4x² - x + 5) . 1] / x²

= [8x² - x - 4x² + x - 5] / x²

= (4x² - 5) / x²

Assuming that the given coordinate is the x-coordinate:

When x = 1, dy/dx = (4 - 5) / 1

dy/dx = -1 which isn't 3 SO looks like I've misread what the given function is
