She spent a lot of money on clothes. 用spent因為你可以形容她買衫的情況已經必然是過去的事或已經發生了的事。不過這只是實際應用寫法，如果你只是為作一句present tense可以用spends.
She becomes pessimistic when she is faced with difficulties.
She is swimming in the middle of the ocean.
很難講解sea和ocean的分別，因為中國人用詞海和海洋是面見大少的名詞，但英語人並不如此簡單。只可以死記吧。Swim一定是在ocean。
Even though she is having a headache, she still works hard.
跟據你的中文句子結構寫出英文。如果技術和文法上可能，翻譯不應把原文的句子結構由兩句變為一句。在寫法上亦有作用，你是想讀者先看到她的頭痛(感覺)還是先看她努力工作 (結果)。我看來你是想讀者感覺她的苦況才引導讀者看她是多麼努力，英文中間的,便是讓讀者停一停，讓你帶他們轉過來看她正面的努力。
