I am planning on joining the air force, only problem is my sister is getting married in April and theres no way i can miss it. So im wondering how fast i can leave for basic after i go to meps, which im planning to do soon after Christmas. If i can get into basic and back before April im concerned with getting sent to tech school and not being able to leave...im just so confused so any help would be appreciated.

The Air Force doesn't ship people off same day the way the Army does. You'll probably have to wait at least a month to ship after processing through MEPS.

You most likely aren't going to be able to take leave between basic training and tech school, if that's what you're thinking (a wedding is not a family emergency).

Ask your recruiter about the Delayed Entry Program (DEP). You should be able to delay your ship date up to six months. Go to MEPS in December and schedule to ship-off after your sisters wedding. Problem solved.

I left a month after MEPS for basic training, but thats because I requested an extension in time with my recruiter. Normally you can set up to leave immediately within the week after MEPS as long as everything checks out at the appointment ( they do medical testing, and sometimes ASVAB testing at MEPS). Once youve completed basic training ( it was 7 weeks when I went thru) then your immediately sent to Tech School. Sometimes, depending on the career youve chosen, and how educated your recruiter is, you can request leave for a week or so right after basic training. There is a special term for this, but ive forgotten. Not many people get it, but I have known a few who were able to take leave right after basic training. But also remember, anything can happen in basic training as well. You can become sick or injuried, perhaps not be able to meet the PT standards, etc and be pushed back a week. If something medically was to happen, they will hold you in the medical squadron until your well enough to continue with the training ( they normally dont send you home since theyve already invested time and money into getting you to BMT). As far as leaving tech school, normally you can not but again it depends on the career field you have chosen. My tech school was only 9 weeks long and I wasnt able to take leave. It might be different for tech schools that are longer then 180 days since some tech schools can be up to 1 year or longer. Your there for schooling, so most likely they wont let you take leave.

Well for me, I went to meps twice (once for a physical and deciding on a job and all that) and the second time I left for basic. You pretty much cant leave Basic (maybe if someone were dying) after basic, the very next day, after grad you'll goto your tech school. Again trying to leave will be pretty much impossible unless its a family emergency. Also you can leave the base (on a weekend) but you have a certain mile radius (i think 250 or 300 miles from base). Talk to your recuiter, he/she should know better. One last thing depending on the job you get then you can figure out how long tech school is which might help you know when to be back home. Good luck, and have fun in Basic :P

you will not know when you leave until you sign your contract at MEPS.. you could be waiting up a year. and NO you may NOT leave during Basic training or AIT.
