The term ‘Corporate Governance’ was at one time a term used to indicate a slightly touchy-feely set of considerations which were often regarded as optional: being indicative of such loose ideas as ‘best practice’, and other phrases open to multiple interpretations.

Since those days, the term has evolved to become much more embedded in corporate consciousness; it implies an adherence to generally accepted good standards of practice and control.

In an environment where accountability is of increasing importance, and where duties of care are now in many cases codified into statute, corporate governance is an essential part of the everyday controls a company’s board and management – and indeed its shareholders – should consider on a regular basis.
