Go to acessories or all programs and then see if you have windows movie maker. It is a really good program and I learned how to use it on the first day. It's quite simple. It's free on Windows. If you don't have windows then most likely you will have some type of video editor or media player. Use those.
You can also purchase cds on how to make movies for beginners at computer stores or at places like walmart, bjs.
I use Pinnacle Studio. Pretty easy to use. Adobe is the standard, though, so if you have the $$ to buy it, learn that.

AVS Video Editor is a full featured, yet easy to use video editor that enables you to edit and enhance your videos and convert them to a variety of formats. You can import existing video clips or capture them directly from your DV recorder or other input device, and automatically split the video into scenes that allow you to cut parts from the movie or re-arrange the content.
You can add additional audio, transition effects, insert images, text overlays, and even video overlays to add special effects or annotations.
So I recommend you this tool, you can see detail and guides here:

1. You need a FAST CPU; a MINIMUM of 2GB fast RAM, 4GB is better; a GOOD video card with 128MB dedicated memory (minimum), and a 500GB HD or larger; and at least 1 ALL format DVD drive; and an OS with the MINIMUM of "auxiliary" programs loaded, (such as games, etc.)
It is better if THIS computer is NOT connected to the Internet as a standard practice, since the "network" connection programs, anti-virus, etc. tend to slow things down a bit; and you want all the speed you can get available for your editing.
2. THEN do a search for video editor programs.
There are quite a few, from free to very expensive. (I will NOT recommend any particular program.)
Many are very good for SOME things, and NOT so good for others, (such as file type conversions, etc.) Read reviews where you can find them.
When you get a program, RTFM!!!!; THEN "practice" a while until you know how everything works.
3. IF the program does NOT have a way to load source material, then your video card MUST have a way to load source material.
You might ALSO want a way to OUTPUT the edited product to something other than a DVD.
4. ALWAYS return the original as well as the finished product; just in case they want changes later, and keep notes on what you did and how you did it.
Hope this helps.

retire programmer.
NOTE:
I can edit FROM tapes (several formats), laserdisk (old format), FILM (8, Super8 and 16 mm), and DVD; with output to tape (several formats), and DVD, AND 16mm FILM (sound or silent) with MY system; as well as change formats with or without editing.
