1.) At some temperature, it took 3.0 minutes for 1.0L of gas A to effuse through a poprous barrier. Under identical conditions, it took 12.0 minutes for 1.0L of gas B to effuse through the porous barrier. Which of the following could be the identities of gas A and gas B? Molar masses are given after each formula.

A.) Gas A= O2(32g/mol) and gas B= H2(2g/mol)

B.) Gas A=H2(2g/mol) and gas B= O2 (32g/mol)

2.) How many of the following compounds/ions must be exceptions to the octet rule? Te is element #52.

TeBr2 ^2- , TeS2, TeBr3 ^-, TeS4^2-, TeBr6

A) 2
B)3

1.)
The answer is B.)

Rate of gas A = 1/ 3 L /min
Rate of gas B = 1/ 12 L /min

According to Graham's law of effusion:
(Rate of gas A)/(Rate of gas B) = √[(Mass of gas B)/(Mass of gas A)]
(1/3)/(1/12) = √[(Mass of gas B)/(Mass of gas A)]
Hence, (Mass of gas B) : (Mass of gas A) = 16 : 1
(Mass of gas A) : (Mass of gas B) = 1 : 16

Since the experiment is done in fixed temperature and uses the same volume of gas,
(Molar mass of gas A) : (Molar mass of gas B)
= 1 : 16
= 2 : 32

2.)
There is no answer.

In all of the five cases, the central atoms should be exceptions to the octet rule.
