i am just a beginner and just touched the guitar and i really want to play it!!! but when i play simple songs like maybe seasons in the sun, the sound when i strum is not clear (i.e like a piano) although it does have a little of the essence of the chord, but it still sounds very blurred. but when i look at videos on youtube, the sounds are very very clear and melodious!!!

what is wrong!?!?!? is there something wrong with the way im playing/strumming or is there something to do with my guitar (a yamaha C-40) (i did tuning on it and the strings have all been tuned by an electronic tuner)

please help me i relaly really wanna play The Scientist by Coldplay and if i don;t get this right i cant get that right :(:(

PLEASE HELP!!! :D:D

AND THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!

Hi,
don't worry, this is a common problem for people starting to learn the guitar. Basically you are not putting your fingers in the right place, just behind each fret and/or not applying the correct pressure to the strings.

As an experiment, pick a simple chord. Now instead of playing the whole chord, place your finger just behind the fret and pick each note of the chord separately. Is it ringing out nicely? If not, move your finger either a little closer to the fret or a little away until the note sounds correctly. If your finger is too close to the fret, or on top of the fret, it will damp the string so it will not sound out properly. If your finger is too far back from the fret, it also will not sound right.

You also need to apply the right pressure to the string. If you are not pressing down hard enough, the string will not sound our correctly.

Do this for all the notes separately so that you can see how they sound if your fingers are in the correct place. Next try to do 2 at a time, then 3 and so on. With practise, you will soon learn where you have to put your fingers and the pressure that is needed for the chord to sound correct.

Keep up the good work. Remember that it takes a lot of time and patience to learn to play any instrument.

There's nothing wrong. It's just the sound you get with your fingers as opposed to using a pick. The fingers are much softer than the pick so the sound is naturally softer. If you want to sharpen it up you can try fingerpicks or grow your nails.

You just need to practice more. There isn't really any short-cuts.

Until you master your fingerings keep up the good work! You can do it too!

Hey, I got the same guitar, sounds like crap. Go to your local guitar shop and try a more expensive one... you notice the difference.
