決定 transitive verb 簡單方法如下:

1. 該動詞是會 接觸 物件的------hit, kiss, touch........

例如:
I hit you

所以 hit-------是 transitive verb

2. 該動詞的後面不可能有 to 的。------go to........

例如:
I go to school.

所以 go-------不是 transitive verb

describe , discuss, sets-----它們都是 transitive verb

1. 它們後面是沒有 TO
2. 所謂 " 接觸 " ，並不一定身體上的接觸，
而是它們後面的字是一名詞。

She describes him.......
We discuss some questions.
The technican sets the program properly.

reply-------當它是 transitive verb 時:
She replied that she was happy to accept our invitation.

她答覆說她很高興接受我們的邀請。

reply-------當它不是 transitive verb 時:
They did not reply to our new proposal.

他們對我們的新建議沒有作出答覆。

sympathize ：
它不是 transitive verb，
因為它的後面不是名詞而是一preposition ( with )
sympathize 不能單獨存在的。
If you sympathize with someone who is in a bad situation, you show that you are sorry for them.
If you sympathize with someone's feelings, you understand them and are not critical of them.

其實，你只要想一想在動詞之後用不用加上一個直接賓語（動詞的「受」者）就可以決定一個動詞是transitive（要加），不然就是intransitive（不可加）。記得，有些動詞只會是transitive (vt)，有些只會是intransitive (vi)，有些則兩樣皆可，要看情況。

go：因為「去」只是說主語本身去某處，「去」這個動作不可以施加於其他人或事情上，所以動詞就是vi。

find：「找」基本上就一定要有受者，因為若沒有受者，「找」根本就沒有意思。因此，動詞便是vt。

write：「寫」通常都會有受者，如「寫信、寫電郵」，那時候的寫便是vt。但，「寫」這個動作也可以不加上受者，如「我每天跟他寫（I write to him everyday)」，這時候的「寫」便是vi。

在中文，未句看起來很怪，因為中文的「寫」是個vt，但英文的寫可以是vt，也可以是vi。

Look at the sentence.

"Please describe the appearance of the rabbit."

"the appearance" is an object. Transitive.

"Can you fly? No, I cannot."

There is no object after fly. Intransitive.

Think in chinese. Would you say 你會飛我嗎? Of course not! Therefore, fly is certainly intransitive.

I wouldn't say 我開 either. What does 'I' open? We don't know.

Think about the usage and look at the sentence. Then decide whether it's trans. or intrans.
