Physics Question... Of sorts?

I need to know the best way to cut a pumpkin... I'm envisioning slits on the upper half, or lower half... suck with physics... hence the question. The goal is to drop it from a roof and have it splatter the most. What's the best route? If possible, if there is a difference, please advise best methods for a pumpkin that has been gutted as well as one that has not (this is not to deface property or anything illegal, simple game for a local radio station.)

Firstly... thank you for your input... some more explanation. Unfortunately, I will not be able to test, so going to go with what makes most sense by then :) There will be no legal issues as we are to drop them from the top of the radio station (roof) to the stations parking lot below. Basically looking for an edge over the rest. Figured physics was my best shot. I'm not sure yet if we will be hollowing the pumpkins like traditional lanterns or just cutting them (with power tools... I might add... is one contingency) and letting them drop full of goop. And again, not sure if we're going for distance, radius, or just total appearance of the destruction (for lack of better term). Thank you all again... Going to play with some smaller gourds a bit to test this all out then make my decision.

What an interesting question. I gave it a star. Somebody has a wonderful imagination.

Before I answer the question, I'd like to tell you that there is a wonderful pumpkin near where I'm staying. It's eyes are slanted downwards and are triangular in shape. The people who created it have left the insides trailing out of it's mouth. Perfectly in line with halloween.

My instincts tell me that the best way to do this is to try it a couple of times. I think I would slit it on the top and along the sides, but not very much, just enough to guarantee that it blow the top off. Is the rule that it spatters the furthest distance from its point of impact? Or that it creates the most mess?

For the most mess, you might consider not cutting it at all!!

For the furthest, drop it on it's side as close to a 45o angle as you can. That way the top will blow off and a 45o angle trajectory will give you the greatest distance.

Good luck on a fun project.

Watch those radio station gags, they are not always legal. Around San Francisco there have been several radio stations get into trouble with the law for their publicity stunts.

One I remember well was when a radio station dropped turkeys out of a hilo in celebration of Thanksgiving. The people below, who had the turkeys rain in on their heads, were not amused... nor were the cops.

So, be warned, despite what you think about the legality of the planned stunt, I'd be careful and research that well before participating. Anyway...

You want to

*cut vertical openings, from top to bottom, in the shell so you can reach inside to remove the pulp and seeds. Use a watermelon ball cutter if you have one available; otherwise, use a tablespoon to scrape the pulp.

*scrape out as much of the innerds as you can. The thinner the shell, the more likely it'll break on impact.

*cut out as much of the empty shell as you are allowed to. And make the cuts up/down between the top and bottom of the gourd, leaving vertical strands of shell remaining. That will encourage the shell to break as though each strand of shell were a twig

I'm not clear how how the release point will be. But you can test your "design" with several pumpkins before doing the real thing. That will give you a sense of just how much cutting and how scraped out the gourd needs to be for breaking on impact.

I would cut zigzag patterns, as many as I could from top to bottom.
