Phenol is only slightly soluble in water. This is because the -OH groups of the phenol molecules can form hydrogen bonds with water molecules, but the bulky benzene rings of the phenol molecules break most of the hydrogen bonds.

Phenol is very soluble in sodium hydroxide solution. This is because phenol is a weak acid which reacts with sodium hydroxide to form sodium phenoxide and water, and sodium phenoxide is an ionic compound which is very soluble in water.

Handle phenol with care. This is because phenol is corrosive to skin.
